Québec City, May 24, 2016 – "By contributing to the funding of COREM, the Québec government recognizes the importance of this research and development centre in supporting an innovative, forward-looking mining industry," says Josée Méthot, President and CEO of the Québec Mining Association (QMA). She was responding to an announcement by the Minister for Mines, Luc Blanchette, that the government would contribute $2.8 million to COREM over 3 years.

Although COREM is 80% self-funding, in particular thanks to financial contributions from mining companies, its effectiveness would be reduced without this government support, along with the ability of mines, whether currently operating or under development, to introduce innovations. "As we face competition from around the world, it is important to take action to ensure that Québec's mining industry remains competitive, especially during the current downturn. There can be no doubt that the introduction of innovative processes is part of the solution. This is why it is essential, in the QMA's view, to maintain a world-calibre centre of expertise such as COREM in Québec, in order to deal with the challenges that face Québec's mining sector," Ms. Méthot continues.

In the view of the QMA, the relation of trust that COREM has been able to establish with mining companies is a key advantage that can be used to ensure that Québec's mining industry develops new methods that will allow it to increase its productivity and reduce its costs.
