Annual survey of the mining sector by the Fraser Institute : QUÉBEC MINING ASSOCIATION: "WHILE OTHER JURISDICTIONS IMPROVE, QUÉBEC IS AT A STANDSTILL"
22/02/2018
Québec City, February 22, 2018 – Although Québec still ranks in the world's top ten and has improved its score in some of the areas surveyed, the Québec Mining Association (QMA) has mixed feelings about the results of the Fraser Institute's annual survey of the attractiveness of mining jurisdictions worldwide. It shows that Québec is standing still in the annual ranking, while other jurisdictions move ahead.
"To attract investors, a jurisdiction must perform well on a number of criteria. Ranking sixth worldwide, Québec is in a strong position, but other places are performing better. Given that we are competing with the rest of the planet, we must continue to work hard to regain the first place we held from 2007 to 2010," states Josée Méthot, the QMA's president and CEO.
According to the survey, regulatory duplication and inconsistencies, the taxation regime, and uncertainty with regard to environmental regulations are some of the points that discourage investment in Québec.
"The elements undermining Québec's position are all concerns that the QMA has brought to the government's attention to ensure a viable future for the mining industry in Québec. Some progress has been made, but more improvement is needed. We are confident that the government will understand the importance of acting quickly. Thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in investment in the regions depend on it," Ms. Méthot continues.
