18/06/2015
Québec City, June 18, 2015 – As part of its annual awards ceremony, the Québec Mining Association (QMA) proudly presented the F.J. O’Connell awards to the QMA members who had achieved the most significant improvement in the field of accident prevention during the year.
The Association congratulates the 2014 award winners in the three following categories:
• Underground operations – less than 400,000 hours: IAMGOLD – Iamrock division
• Underground operations – 400,000 hours or more: Goldcorp – Éléonore
• Surface operations, transportation and primary metals processing - Horne Smelter, a Glencore company
Each year, the trophies are presented on the basis of a company's efforts and improved performance and its results compared to the average for all QMA members during the year. This is weighted by an additional factor that rewards companies that continue to excel over a period of several years.
"The focus on workplace health and safety in the mining sector is long-standing," says Josée Méthot, QMA's president and CEO. "It is important to remember that the QMA was created in 1936 specifically to improve health and safety for mine workers. We believe it is extremely important to recognize and reward our members' efforts, since the initiatives and ongoing commitment of our leading companies has created a modern, safe mining industry of which we can all be proud."
