Press Releases

Québec City, January 18, 2017 – The Québec Mining Association (QMA) and the mining research and development corporation SOREDEM are pleased to announce that the 2016 Claude Drouin scholarship has been awarded to Audrey Goulet, originally from Rouyn-Noranda and currently a Master's level student in rock mechanics at Université Laval. This post-graduate award of $4,000 for Master's and Doctoral students is designed to support research programs to develop new mining technologies.

Audrey Goulet, from Rouyn-Noranda in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, has an outstanding academic record and presented a research project focusing on integrated geo-mechanical characterization in mines operating under extreme constraints in seismic areas. The project was based on a case study of Agnico Eagle's Laronde Mine, in conjunction with the Australian Centre for Geomechanics. "SOREDEM would like to commend all the work Ms. Goulet put into her project. The selection committee was impressed by the rigour of her work and the relevance of her research," states François Pronovost, chair of SOREDEM's board of directors and senior mining engineer at Iamgold's Westwood Mine.

"It is important to support and recognize R&D in the mining industry," says Josée Méthot, the QMA's president and CEO. "To remain competitive on world markets, Québec must remain at the forefront, and R&D is one of the ways to achieve this goal. This is why the QMA supports SOREDEM in its mission and wants to encourage a new generation of mining specialists."
