Québec City, October 5, 2017 – The first-ever job creation awards ceremony for Québec, the Prix Créateurs d’emplois du Québec, has highlighted the major contribution made by job creators in developing Québec and its regions. The Québec Mining Association (QMA) is proud to offer its congratulations to CMAC-THYSSEN Mining Group, Stornoway Diamond Corporation and Glencore's Raglan Mine, which all received awards.
CMAC-THYSSEN Mining Group and Stornoway Diamond Corporation both received awards in the "Champion" category for their remarkable performance in the region based on the number of jobs created or maintained. Raglan Mine received an award in the "Coup de Coeur" category for its exemplary regional contribution in terms of innovation, strategy or impact in creating or maintain jobs in the sector.
"We are proud to have companies like these among our members. We constantly highlight the important role played by the mining sector in the socio-economic prosperity of Québec and its regions. To see this contribution recognized and rewarded by the Québec business community is an honour that reflects on the industry as a whole," says Josée Méthot, the QMA's president and CEO.
The mining industry is a key driving force for Québec's economic development. Out of a total of 45,500 direct, indirect and induced jobs generated or maintained by the mining industry, 15,550 are held by residents of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, and 1,511 by residents of the Nord-du-Québec region.
"The economic benefits of mining development are felt throughout Québec. Recognizing and supporting mining companies operating in Québec reinforces a key sector of our economy. In short, support for the mining industry translates into greater prosperity for the whole of Québec," Josée Méthot concludes.
The awards ceremony was presented by Fondaction, in a partnership with Corporation des parcs industriels – Québec and Conseil du patronat du Québec (CPQ).
