Government authorization for the Canadian Malartic Mine : GOOD NEWS FOR MINING DEVELOPMENT ACCORDING TO THE QUÉBEC MINING ASSOCIATION
19/04/2017
Québec City, April 19, 2017 – The Québec Mining Association (QMA) welcomes the Québec government decision to authorize the extension of the Canadian Malartic Mine, which will consolidate high-quality jobs, ensure major economic benefits for Québec, and maintain a strong mining industry in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.
"The company has made a clear commitment to respect the population and the environment. Its record speaks for itself, since it has implemented many different measures to ensure a harmonious approach to mine development. The work done by Canadian Malartic has paid off, since 94% of the Malartic population supports the cohabitation guide it has proposed. The mine is well established in the community and the population recognizes its positive impact. With this new government authorization, the mine's lifespan is extended by six years, which is good news for the region and for Québec as a whole," says Josée Méthot the QMA's president and CEO.
The Association supported the extension project at the hearings held by the Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE) because of its structural importance and the actions taken by the company in the past to remedy problems and dissatisfaction by introducing corrective actions. "The government order sets out the conditions that must be met by Canadian Malartic, and we believe that the company will meet them as it has done in the past. The Canadian Malartic Partnership has taken the situation in hand to ensure that its activities have as little impact on the population as possible, and this will continue with the extension," Josée Méthot concludes.
