2018 Elections : THE QUÉBEC MINING ASSOCIATION HOPES TO SEE CLEAR COMMITMENTS ON MINERAL DEVELOPMENT FROM THE POLITICAL PARTIES
19/09/2018
Québec City, September 19, 2018 – The Québec Mining Association (QMA) took advantage of Premier Philippe Couillard's trip to the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region to reiterate its priorities and needs and promote a responsible approach to wealth-creating mineral development in Québec.
In the view of the QMA and its members, it is important that the Québec government that emerges from the poll of October 1 make every effort to
• reduce delays in the environmental authorization of projects, without making the requirements any less strict;
• reduce the costs connected with mineral and resource development.
Although all three main parties have shown an openness to the mining industry, it is clear to the QMA that more must be done to maintain an atmosphere conducive to mining activity and investment in order to ensure the long-term viability of the mining sector in Québec.
"Although it is true that the mining industry is doing better, in general, than in previous years, it is important not to let our guard drop. It takes between 10 and 15 years from the discovery of a mineral deposit to the opening of a mine, and as a result we must invest now for the future and propose measures that will make Québec the envy of the mining world. It is also important to remember that some mineral products are not included in the current boom. They require support, in particular to attract investors," says Josée Méthot, the QMA's president and CEO.
